A depiction of an auto-da-fé in Lisbon

By the mid-16th century, the Inquisition was a widespread and ubiquitous institution throughout Europe, and before long, Holy Offices were established in the Portuguese and Spanish overseas territories of Central America and South America, as well as the islands of Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. It was inevitable that someone of a mindset similar to Torquemada would look upon the free life and commerce of the Jews in the Orient as an affront to the glory of God. It was also an offense to the sensibilities of early Catholic missionaries in India to see native peoples living in a state of grace, practicing their ancient religions and faiths in complete ignorance and disregard of the true faith.
